FeedBurner’s View of the Feed Market

Burning Questions • FeedBurner’s View of the Feed Market

FeedBurner on Google Reader and more…

While it’s always encouraging to see feed subscription numbers go up (Google’s recent inclusion of subscription data for Google Reader and Google Homepage increased the number of feed subscriptions FeedBurner can report to publishers by 53% alone), these subscription numbers in a vacuum only tell part of the story. Equally important is the extent to which people are reading feeds and interacting with them. In today’s post we’ll take a look at one aspect of the feed aggregator market – the web-based aggregators – and draw some conclusions about how audiences are consuming content in new and different ways. There are obviously many other feed-reading clients we could discuss (e.g. email, widgets, desktop aggregators, etc.), and we’ll tackle those in future posts.

Netvibes Promises Cross-Platform Widget Compatibility

Netvibes Promises Cross-Platform Widget Compatibility – techcrunch.com

Netvibes announces as code it once, play it anywhere widget platform. TC has a good write up.

The fragmentation of widget platforms presents a problem for developers, who need to develop and then maintain different versions of widgets for the various desktop widget platforms (Vista, Mac, Google, Yahoo) as well as online platforms like Pageflakes and Netvibes (and lots of others).

The W3C has a working draft of a 1.0 Widget specification, which if adopted would make life easier for developers by requiring some standardization. However, the best solution for everyone would be a world where a widget works on every platform, no matter where it was originally created.

Google Reader now reporting subscriber counts

Official Google Reader Blog: One subscriber, two subscribers, three…

This is good news. I think the Google Reader is the best currently on the market and I’m very interested to see if it;s driving RSS adaptation as of late.

Publishers have been asking us to report the number of users that are subscribed to their feeds in Google Reader. This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while, but with all the products that use feeds at Google, corralling the data in one place was like herding cats. So herd we did, and as of today, our crawler reports the number of Google users subscribed to the feed. The count includes subscribers from Google Reader and the Google Personalized Homepage, and in the future may include other Google products that support feeds.
